Yale-New Haven Hospital
Founded in 1826 as the nation's fifth hospital, Yale-New Haven Hospital (YNHH) is located in New Haven, Conn. YNHH is a 944-bed tertiary referral center, which includes 201 beds designated as the Yale-New Haven Children's Hospital and 76 beds designated as the Yale-New Haven Psychiatric Hospital. YNHH serves as the primary teaching hospital for the Yale University School of Medicine (YSM).

Together with YSM, Yale-New Haven Hospital is nationally recognized for its commitment to teaching and clinical research. YSM, YNHH and the Yale Cancer Center have been designated by the National Institutes of Health for the excellence of the Cancer Prevention Research Unit, Cancer Information Service Center, Comprehensive Cancer Service, Digestive Disease Research Center, Child Health Research Center, Children's and Adults' Clinical Research Centers and Claude D. Pepper Older Americans Independence Center.

The Yale-New Haven Heart Center is a national pioneer in developing new heart treatments and therapies. As Connecticut's premier referral center, the center receives the most difficult heart patients from throughout New England—patients who come for heart transplants, high-risk valve or bypass surgery and angioplasty, as well as those who have multiple problems or undiagnosed heart problems requiring an expert cardiologist.

YNHH commonly ranks among the best hospitals in the U.S., was accredited by the Joint Commission for the Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) in 1999, and is one of 50 teaching hospitals nationwide which train nearly 40 percent of all U.S. medical residents each year.

With approximately 2,200 university-based and community physicians representing more than 100 specialties on its medical staff, Yale-New Haven Hospital, Yale-New Haven Children's Hospital and Yale-New Haven Psychiatric Hospital serve over 670,000 outpatient and emergency visits and 39,000 inpatient discharges each year. In addition, YNHH is the second largest employer in the area, with more than 6,000 employees.

  • Temple Radiology Group offers full-service outpatient imaging, including state-of-the-art magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), computed tomography (CT) scan and ultrasound. This is the first freestanding full-service radiology group in the U.S. to be accredited by the Joint Commission for the Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO).
  • The Eye-Laser Center specializes in refractive surgery, which involves the use of an eximer laser to correct nearsightedness and/or astigmatism, thereby decreasing the patient's dependence on eyeglasses or contact lenses. The center is run jointly with the Yale School of Medicine.
  • Yale-New Haven Gamma Knife Center uses gamma knife technology to perform radiosurgery. This technology provides a single, high-dose radiation treatment to areas of the brain that are difficult to reach through nontraditional surgical techniques.
