Response planning

Response planningResponse planning is an enormous undertaking for health care organizations that requires each facility to not only define how it will respond during a disaster, but also to understand its role in a larger community, regional or national response.

Emergency operations plans

The Center has developed a template of “best practices” related to emergency response in healthcare organizations and can provide assistance with developing effective, workable emergency operations plans for those organizations.

Clinical protocol development

Clinical protocol developmentWith a team of world-renowned experts at its disposal in areas including disaster medicine, infectious disease, radiation response, burn treatment and behavioral health, the Center has developed and implemented clinical protocols based upon research and reports drawn from actual disasters. These evidence-based protocols allow health care delivery organizations to realistically plan and allocate resources based on the experiences of healthcare organizations that have responded to such incidents.

Biodosimetry laboratory

Developed by the Center in collaboration with the Connecticut Department of Public Health, the primary objective of this laboratory is the timely assessment of radiation exposure to help guide the actions of health care personnel and emergency officials. In addition to using proven analytical methods, the laboratory is also developing new methodologies for calculating individual radiation exposure, which will allow for the screening of a larger number of people in the event of a terrorist-related radiation incident involving mass casualties. One of only three laboratories in the nation focusing on biological dosimetry, it is a leader in evaluating and managing the health risks of radiation exposure.
